Second Annual Street Fight for Hunger

Second Annual Street Fight for Hunger / Whether the Hadouken or the cross up move is your death bringer move of choice, Street Fighter lovers have come back out and together this year with the release of Street Fighter IV. Those in Generations X and Y can bask in the old-school Street Fighter arcade style of fight games, mediocre graphics and all. While with an array of new characters with new moves (though why do the female characters look like their thighs have been injected with steroids?), the favorite characters are still alive and literally kicking.

If you’ve been playing SFIV non-stop since February, chances are you’re pretty good by now. Well, you’re probably already a gaming dork, anyway. But aside from that, if you’ve punched and lighting kicked your way through the Hawaii Video Gaming League’s Street Fighter IV tournaments, you’ll be at the Loft this Sunday for the finals. The winner gets to represent Hawaii at the EVO tournament in Vegas.

Jeff Young, commissioner of the HVGL, is already qualified for EVO himself (“My favorite characters are Blanka and Balrog”), and will be running the tournament on Sunday. He’ll be in good company, as in addition to the winner of this Sunday’s tournament, “Hawaii has the only high-ranked Guile player in the world,” who of course will also be at EVO.

Young emphasizes that HVGL is a non-profit and reaches out to the community when it can, not only with this Foodbank fundraiser, but also with fundraisers for schools and beach clean-ups.

Sunday’s event will also have consoles set up on the sides for spectators to play SFIV. No one should feel left out. And certainly no one should be what Young calls a “rage quitter.” Note to sore losers: stay home.

The Second Annual Street Fight for Hunger, Loft, 115 N. Hotel St., Sun 7/5, 3pm qualifying tournament; 7pm Finals; $5 spectator fee ($3 presale), $30 tournament entry fee ($20 with 40-ounce food donation), 21+, 808loft [email: promotions]; Hawaii Video Gaming League, [myspace.com], [youtube.com].
