He was standing in the synagogue doorway. He’d been there quite a while. A woman couldn’t help but notice his shirt. “You’re wearing a Father Damien shirt, and you’re…Jewish?” He was at a synagogue, after all. “No,” he said, “I’m Catholic.”
“No matter,” she said. “You’re warmly welcomed. Come in.” He deferred. He said he was working. “On Yom Kippur,” she exclaimed? “For the governor,” he said. “She’s inside.”
Father Damien makes an appearance at synagogue on Yom Kippur in support of a Jewish governor. “That’s Hawaii,” she thinks.
