Underarm Armor
An Excerpt from Do One Green Thing / Because the underarm is close to the breast, the estrogen-like behavior of some conventional ingredients in deodorants has given rise to concern. Parabens (a class of chemicals used as preservatives by pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies) have caused growth of breast cancer cells in lab tests. Aluminum-based compounds, the active ingredients in antiperspirants, temporarily block wetness by clogging sweat ducts.
So which brands are the best deodorant picks? Try these third-party-certified organic or natural deodorants that are free of potentially harmful chemicals and fragrances: Burt’s Bees, Dr. Hauschka, Logona, Miessence, Nature’s Gate, Terressentials and Weleda.
Or for those of you unafraid of DIY, mix a little baking soda (a natural deodorizer) with some cornstarch (absorbs moisture) and pat it on.
