The Friend, 926 Bethel St.
In 1837, Reverend John Diell established the Oahu Bethel Church, a spot of worship for the thousands of seamen who visited Honolulu in 1840–1870. The 1886 fire destroyed the original flat, and George Lucas erected a two-story building the following year. It served as the offices for The Friend, a publication of the church and the self-described “Oldest Newspaper West of the Rockies.” Bethel Street takes its name from the church.
