Welcome to Food & Drink 2009, our fifth-annual exploration and celebration of the industry, indulgences and imbibe-ables that make up the local gustatory scene. In honor of that milestone, we approached chefs, bloggers, bartenders and others and asked each of them a different question involving the number “five.” As you’ll see, some of our foodies just couldn’t color inside the lines, and responded in ways we didn’t expect.
As a certain national food celeb would say, that’s a good thing. In these pages, a top chef waxes poetic about what he’d do given a day to impress a visiting friend, a food writer explores the nettlesome question of Honolulu restaurant ambience and one of our own staffers imagines what she’d do if forced to choose one last meal in town. That plus a farm leader offering reasons to hope for Island agriculture’s future, a bartender pointing to some unexpected flavors you might be tasting in your summer cocktails and much more. There’s a little bit for everyone in this year’s issue, and we like it that way. That’s our paper, and that’s Honolulu.
