Riff madness
Rifftrax / By now it feels like we should be able to mention Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett, the voices behind Rifftrax, without talking about their work on Mystery Science Theater 3000. After all, in the last four years they’ve lambasted more than 100 films–from genuine classics such as Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark, to the more dubious Twilight franchise and Battlefield Earth–with their downloadable commentary. Still, it’s easier to explain to those who aren’t familiar with Rifftrax that it is like MST3K without the shadow puppets.
Originally envisioned to show the horrors of pot use, the 1936 cult-morality propaganda film Reefer Madness has been ironically adopted as an unofficial mascot of the drug culture, spawning countless head shop paraphernalia, a campy off-Broadway musical and a made-for-TV adaptation starring Alan Cumming and Kristen Bell in 2005. Stranger still, the film helped bankroll a fledgling New Line Cinema when Keith Stoup bought a print for less than $300 and played it on college campuses. The studio went on to release the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
So it makes sense that to complete the circle of absurdity, Rifftrax would pay homage to the film that unites them all. Nelson, Murphy and Corbett will beam their live piss-take of Reefer Madness into more than 400 theaters across the country, thus demonstrating that stoner comedy can be more than repeating, “Dave’s not here.” (Though we bet that line will make an appearance.)
