Since Uncle Bo’s Pupu Bar and Grill moved into the La Lieto’s space on Kapahulu Avenue last year, it’s garnered a flock of loyal followers who talk about the place like it’s a club, not a restaurant. Actually, it’s a pretty straightforward bar and grill. Except for the decor, which is none–or all–of the above. It’s sleeked out (shiny black tables, chain link curtains) in the front room and public-school-banquet chic (gold-painted brick walls, white paper tablecloths) in the back room. Like the eatery’s menu, the ambience offers something for everyone.
But everyone should visit Uncle Bo’s for the filet mignon. For $18, the 8-ounce cut of ultra tender beef is this city’s best deal on gourmet steak. The steak comes cooked just right: Charred and lightly crisp on the outside, rare and juicy on the inside. It comes with a couple of [sides…oh], who cares about the sides?
