Waste not, want not
Oahu transplants from purportedly eco-friendly cities such as San Francisco and concerned locals alike often complain about the island’s lack of environmentally friendly resources. However, two of the City Council’s green-leaning members, Ann Kobayashi and Donovan Dela Cruz, are looking to continue to push the city to create a more sustainable infrastructure. This time around, Kobayashi and Dela Cruz have introduced resolution 09-262, which urges the administration to implement a food-waste recycling program for multi-unit residential buildings.
As a model, the members looked to Toronto, which has implemented a food-waste recycling program and has had a 70 percent landfill diversion rate. Council member Dela Cruz says, “It’s not just one small program. We want to create a paradigm shift. Recycling and reusing has to be part of our culture. It has to be part of a way we think, of how we live our life every single day.”
There has not yet been a public hearing–the resolution was just introduced on August 28 and will next be heard by the public infrastructure committee. Those interested in testifying or simply getting more information on the issue can contact Dela Cruz’s office at 768-5036 or Kobayashi’s office at 768-5005.
