From food to fuel
Hawaii-based company Pacific Biodiesel recently launched the “Restaurants for Renewables” Awareness Program, issuing decals to restaurants that recycle cooking oil, so that patrons can better judge eco-friendliness. Jenna King of Pacific Biodiesel says that about 500 restaurants on the island participate in the program, with more to join in the future. Restaurants from Grand Café & Bakery to the Bistro at Castle Medical Center to corporate giants such as McDonald’s utilize Pacific Biodiesel’s free waste oil and grease interceptor waste pick-up services.
Pacific Biodiesel uses its local plants (on Oahu, Maui and soon Big Island) to convert 13,000 tons of waste oil into biodiesel every year. The largest customer of Pacific Biodiesel is the fleet of the City and County of Honolulu.
