Chilly Treats
When I was a kid, nothing would make me happier than a trip to the local ice cream shop. Now, nothing makes me happier than having a double soy caramel latte all to myself.
Moving to Kailua has given me the best of both worlds. At ChadLou’s–a cozy, family-owned ice cream and coffee house resembling something like an indie espresso joint in Portlandia–I can satisfy both kid and adult.
ChadLou’s makes their own homemade ice cream sandwiches using made-in-house cookies (choose chocolate chip, peanut butter, or M&M) holding great gobs of Dave’s locally made ice cream. Because it’s made with local ingredients, the ice cream flavors tend to vary, but always available staples include Okinawan Sweet Potato, chocolate, chocolate chip, vanilla and coconut macadamia nut.
The sandwich that everyone raves about is Okinawan Sweet Potato ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies. So at 10am one steamy August day, I decided the best thing I could do was try one. And let me tell you, it’s definitely worth the brain freeze.
Being an adult is better if it means eating ice cream for breakfast. And I don’t have to share.
