Drink to Your Destiny
As much as we’re grateful to the Maya for their inventions–a system of government, pottery, corn tortillas–all that apocalyptic fretting was something we could have done without. Lest we forget the value of portents, Maui Brewing Company crafted a brew to commemorate the supposed fatalism of 2012, Aloha Baktun.
Translating (generously) to “Hello and goodbye to a calendar period of 400 years,” the beer celebrates mysticism in drink form. A baktun refers to a cycle of 394.26 years in the ancient Maya calendar system.
Released on Dec. 21, 2012 as a draft beer by Maui Brewing Company’s Lahaina pub, Aloha Baktun cans are available at select retail stores statewide. It’s a Belgian-style stout brewed with chocolate, chipotle chilies and cinnamon–all locally grown. That attention-grabbing suite of flavors holds up to any drinker’s scrutiny. It has a light body and the flavors are mellow rather than assertive, with a slight chocolate aftertaste. A great beer for a party: uncomplicated but repeatable. Aloha Baktun continues Maui Brewing Company’s reputation of eco-friendly and 100-percent locally made beers.
You’d better move fast if you want to toast the Maya, as this limited release will not last until the next baktun.
