There are a lot of proverbs out there about how one’s life ought to be lived. Most are cheesy, some are apt, but there’s no cliché we like so much as “work hard, play hard.” It’s the simplest way to sum up the ever-important balance between buckling down and letting loose. Of course, there’s some overlap–playing hard can also be hard work, and hard work can actually be fun. Just sitting on the couch and watching someone else work hard can amount to playing pretty hard, too. We hope the following ideas spark some ideas for the active and inactive, outdoor and indoor sports-lovers on your gift list.

We often print online comments in our “Letters to the Editor” section of Honolulu Weekly. While submitted letters are often edited for length and clarity, online comments we use are printed entirely as they are written for the website.
