Nudge nudge, wink wink
Clubs / We know fashions and trends usually come full circle if you wait long enough. Most of the time, we can’t believe they were popular in the first place. (Leg warmers, people? Really?) But we couldn’t be happier about the return of burlesque. Bawdy humor, high kicks, great musical numbers and outfits that accentuate rather than offend, it’s a return to a kinder, gentler form of voyeurism, and there’ll be plenty to see this Saturday at Next Door with Cabaret Apocalyptique. Billed as ‘A Strip Tease in Five Acts,’ there’s more than enough nudge nudge, wink wink for all of us. Featuring a self-described ragtag assortment of local performance artists, dancers, musicians, female impersonators and comedians, the evening starts with the Shakti Dance Movement and keeps going with local favorites The 86 List and The Hell Caminos playing their loud, fast amalgamations of punk, rockabilly and ska. And if you’ve spent any time in the local watering holes you’ve probably seen several members of Cherry Blossom Burlesque and you know you shouldn’t miss the chance to see them all in one place. Two imports, burlesque performers Kitty Chow from San Francisco and Leroi the Girl Boi from New York fill out the bill along with the stockings and bustiers. Good-natured fun with more than a dash of naughtiness? Count us in.
