Rising son
Clubs / Japan house music icon Ko Kimura hits Waikiki’s Lotus Soundbar for a special 2K7 engagement of dance music excellence. So it’s time to don the festive party hats and tiares, blow on your noisemakers and dansu your way into ‘07.
Kimurasan first fell in love with the Chicago-based sound on a trip to the Big Apple in 1987, critics weren’t exactly receptive to it, referring to the genre as a knock-off and too similar to eurobeat–the dominant sound at that time.
My, how things change.
Along with being one of Japan’s most recognizable faces always on the cutting edge of house music, Kimura has also exposed, popularized and even taught the finer points and history of house to the masses for well over 20 years. The DJ samurai was one of the first to put out a mixtape of strictly dance music. His management company, Futic, is one of the leading players in Japan’s highly competitive and congested club scene.
Mention the fact that he’s down with Vestax, Stanton, Technics and Pioneer as well as Stussy, Nike and Calvin Klein, there’s no questioning the rising son’s untouchable popularity, mass appeal and music swag.
Lotus Soundbar, 2301 Kuhio Ave., Sun. 12/31, 9pm-4am, $10, 21+, 924-1688
