Six strings and a melody
Concerts / 2006 was a big year for Matt Costa. And thanks to the help of friends and musicians like Jack Johnson and No Doubt guitarist Tom Dumont, the new year is only looking busier and more successful for the young musician from Huntington Beach. Not that Costa can’t hold his own when it comes to a six-string and ballad–if you ask us, ‘The Road,’ his track on the collabo album A Brokedown Melody, is as good as the banana pancake song.
Costa was the only artist this year to play every major music festival, including Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, Coachella and Vegoose. He played sold-out shows at the House of Blues in Orange County and, of course, shared a stage with Johnson.
He stops off at Next Door next week on his way home from an Australia tour. The walls of the brick-and-steel club will, for one ambient evening, hold the low-key quiet of Costa’s buttery voice and simple Dylanesque guitar melodies from his new album Songs We Sing.
The tunes are melancholy yet poppy and definitely mellow, so take any measures necessary to get into the right frame of mind.
Next Door, 41 Hotel St., Tues 1/9, $15 advance, $20 at the door, doors open at 8pm
