Walk this way

Feed your ear!

Too much American Idol? Too many hours logged on the ole Xbox? In addition to it being good and healthy for you, here’s another excellent excuse to go out into the spring sunshine and get some exercise.

Head down to Kapiolani Park on Sunday to participate in the 18th Annual Honolulu AIDS Walk. Relax, it’s only three freaking miles (an easy 5K) and this isn’t about jogging your brains out anyway. All donations raised at this event benefit Life Foundation, a local organization that provides free HIV testing and services for people living with HIV/AIDS. An estimated 3,000 people in Hawaii are living with HIV or AIDS and approximately 40,000 new HIV infections occur each year in the United States—half of these among individuals under the age of 25. Even in this enlightened age, those aren’t good numbers.

Last year’s AIDS walk raised over $200,000. This year, Life Foundation hopes to raise more than $250,000. Registration brochures can be picked up at any Starbucks location, call 521-AIDS, or register online at [honoluluaidswalk.org].

As an added bonus, a strong showing for a worthy cause like this is probably good karma, and most definitely sets a good example for the keiki, too.
