SoHo fo sho’
SoHo Mixed Media Bar / Don’t believe any reporter who tries to deny the old stereotype about newspeople and their propensity for working hard and partying harder. It’s just that reporting makes us really thirsty–parched even. So much so that, back in the day, plenty of newspapers’ regular haunts had special phone lines installed so that editors could call to get directly in touch with their reporters mid-swill.
So maybe now would be a good time to ask SoHo Mixed Media Bar–which is about 117 steps from Honolulu Weekly’s door, depending on your gait–if they’ll hook it up for us. Proximity aside, the highly-anticipated Chinatown nightspot offers plenty more reasons to stop by. Man-about-town and SoHo owner Daniel Gray, formerly of LOFT, has managed to turn what was once a dingy, scary, cave-like den into a cavernous Mecca for art and music. In gutting the entire space, he raised eight-foot ceilings to more than 25 feet.
Gray describes the bar as a trendy, upscale lounge–but one that’s laid back enough to forgo a cover charge and do without any sort of dress code. There’s also a larger backroom that will feature live music performances about 10 times a month. An incredible month-long renovation has made what was once the Mall Café unrecognizable, and SoHo’s grand opening will undoubtedly be a huge draw for First Friday revelers.
The fun starts with Rock Shop’s inimitable clothing swap at 3pm. As the evening progresses, $10 will buy you access to live body art, a massive live graffiti mural created outside and a performance by the DJ collective Noctural Sound Krew. Oh and did we mention the drinks? The bar’s hosted–which means you can order a round for your friends without spending more than your way in the door. See you there.
