Night moves

Nocturnal Wanderer / Gao Xingjian’s Nocturnal Wanderer will kick off the late-night season for the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Department of Theatre and Dance.
Director Ronald Gilliam is currently pursuing his PhD in Asian Theatre and has previous experience with Gao Xingjian’s work, having directed “Between Life and Death” while attending Butler University in 2003. “Gao’s work challenges the director to depart from realism while emphasizing the importance of the written text,” says Gilliam. “Gao’s text also inspires the director to create striking abstract images,” he adds.
Audiences will experience a philosophical journey colored with original music and the occasional magic trick. Described as a three-part nightmare, Nocturnal Wanderer dives into subjects of human existence and the afterlife.
