Flippin out !
Flip Out! / It’s October, which means–aside from dressing up as a slutty incarnation of a pumpkin-vampire–it’s time to celebrate Filipino-American History Month. Flip Out!, a performance piece by three Hawaii-born Filipinas, will feature stories rooted in family folklore, focusing particularly on growing up Filipino in Hawaii–from the undercover gambling houses on Hotel Street to the plantations fields of old Hawaii.
Flip Out!’s theme, “Three Filipinas made in America, made to survive,” lends the show an upbeat, buoyant air, though they’ll be plenty of room for poignant tales as well–about the disappointments and hardships that Filipino immigrants, in search of a better life, are forced to confront in an unfamiliar, and at times, unwelcoming new world.
Held at Kawananakoa Intermediate’s theatre, with the three women performing barefoot, the event proves to be both intimate and raw. Get your tickets fast–the last two shows were sold-out affairs.
