Ajumma! Are you Krazy??? / Remember back in the late ’90s, when Korean soap operas gained a huge following locally? This was different than Iron Chef–K-Drama probably broke largely because the shows were only one channel removed from über-popular KHON on the Oceanic Cablevision system, and you had to pass channel 4 in order to get from FOX to the rest of the network affiliates. They certainly weren’t a leap forward in narrative or visual story telling. Nevertheless, they were weirdly compelling, and still command a loyal following nearly a decade later.
The shows are the subject of a legitimately funny new shortish feature by Brent Anbe. Ajumma! Are you Krazy???, billed as “Hawaii’s first kim chee comedy,” follows three local K-drama obsessed ladies as they prepare for the Honolulu arrival of their Korean idol. The three actors–Thea Matsuda, Tessie Magaoay and Cari L. Mizumoto–are marvelous, and come off like TV commercial Bankoh Tellers Gone Wild. The script features some classic situational comedy and the project is a success. It’s screening at HIFF on Saturday, alongside five other short films.
