Mai, how you’ve grown

Likkle Mai / A vocalist for the heavy-hitting Japanese dub and reggae band Dry and Heavy, Likkle Mai has branched out to meet solo success with the tiny stature, orange hair, vocal register and huge eyes that the typical J-pop star has. At least she doesn’t have dreads. And doesn’t do dance hall queen moves on stage. In a fusion fashion that many young Japanese nationals take on other subcultures of the world, Mai’s music ranges from Japanese pop anthems to Japanese-accented Jamaican-inflected English language songs to reggae songs in her mother tongue. Never been to Japan or Jamaica to witness the popularity of this Japanese-Jamaican connection? Just head on down to Pipeline. Local bands Humble Soul and RootiKal RiDDiM pave the way for this little (or shall we say Likkle?) lady.
