I can see clearly now
You Are My Blindspot (Part 1) / Thirtyninehotel’s mixologist Christian Self recently earned the title of “Maker of the World’s Best Mai Tai” at the second annual Don the Beachcomber Mai Tai Festival in Kailua-Kona and walked away with a $10,000 check. Pretty impressive. And those who frequent the establishment may have recently noticed that thirtyninehotel’s menu has been upgraded from traditional bar foods such as guacamole and hummus to mouth-watering foodie taste-bud orgasms like marinated olives with little polenta puffs and a quail’s egg on top.
It’s also become one of Honolulu’s most progressively creative multi-media spaces and it continues to evolve–welcoming a fourth installment of its 39 Chambers Artist Residency Program (39 CARP).
You Are My Blindspot (Part 1) showcases the artwork of Gina Osterloh, who presents photographic works and a new light installation. Through still performances, papier-mâché mannequins and cardboard cutouts, her photographs present a focus problem in the structure of seeing. How individuals define themselves in relationship to the physical and psychological room that surrounds them is one of the inherent questions Osterloh is asking.
Thirtyninehotel strives to build bridges between Hawaii and the rest of the modern world in hopes of furthering international arts awareness, and with this fourth installment, it seems its intentions are anything but blind.
