Cool Ballets for a Hot Summer–A Medley of American Dance / A ballet in the final weeks of summer might seem a little unseasonable. Swanky evenings spent scrutinizing the precise movements of ballerinas in a dark, beaux-arts auditorium calls to mind snowflakes and Christmastime and nutcrackers, but Ballet Hawaii likes to change it up.
Our local ballet company will present Cool Ballets for a Hot Summer–A Medley of American Dance to assure us that anything, even ballet, is fit for the summer. The program, which is part of the University of Hawaii Outreach College’s August Days of Dance Series, will showcase the works of notable American (yes, American) choreographers, including George Balanchine’s “Serenade,” Jerome Robbins’ “Andantino,” Peter Martins’ “Zakouski” and Tom Pazik’s “Trio” and “By George.” What’s more, the dances will be set to music by Bach, Gershwin, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky. Renowned dancers from across the country, such as Romi Beppu of Ballet West; Mark Tucker of Oregon Ballet; Megan Fairchild, Andrew Veyette and Robert Fairchild of New York City Ballet; and Timour Bourtasenkov of Carolina Ballet, will lead the show. Surely this ballet, and all its tights-adorned, pirouette-infused splendor, proves summer truly is full of surprises.
