Snippy Shows
Stage / There’s Off-Broadway; there’s Off-Off Broadway; and then there’s Off-Off-Off-Off-Take-an-Ambien-and-Catch-a-Plane-from-NYC-to-Hawaii-Off Broadway.
The “fringe festival” concept isn’t new, but as an officially organized event, it is for Honolulu. Performers of all stripes–actors, musicians, dancers, performance artists, and in some cases, you!–come together for the first official Oahu Fringe Festival.
Over three evenings, discover 16 shows ranging from circus theatre and cabaret to improvised rock concerts and modern dancing. The uncensored content varies widely, but what keeps them cut from the same cloth is they’re loosely tied to the fringe.
Here are a few gigs piquing our Weekly interest. Allen Hope Sermonia’s American Mixed Tape is a nostalgic exploration of three things we love: Asian Americans, pop music and cassette tapes, all wound up in an All American Girl vibe as if it were staged by a guy like Rolling Stone writer Rob Sheffield. The Rule The World Tour by washed up faux rock stars Oil in the Alley is an interactive/improvised “Greatest Hits” concert by what we imagine to be the perfect opening act to this month’s REO Speedwagon concert. A play My Mobster by Joy Nash is a true story about a sheltered virgin, foreign criminal and hyper-religious mom–enough said.
What tickles your fringe fancy? –
