You may recognize his voice as Master Dong from Porndogs: The Adventures of Sadie, but don’t tell your girlfriend that. Tell her you know Paul Ogata as the star of Amasian: The Amazing Asian, a short film directed by fellow local boy Gerard Elmore. The internationally known comedian, whose witty humor won him the 32nd Annual San Francisco International Comedy Competition in 2007 (placing him amongst other winners such as Sinbad and Dana Carvey), returns to his homeland for a special all ages Christmas show with Andy Bumatai, opener Jose Dynamite and host James Mane.
With few comedy clubs in Honolulu, there aren’t a lot of platforms for local comedians to establish themselves. That’s why Ogata moved to L.A. in 2006–it obviously paid off. With a standup album (Paul Ogata Stands Up: Live in Hong Kong) and a role in Damon Wayans’s Behind the Smile, this son of Pearl City has made a name for himself worldwide.
Bumatai, who also played a role in Amasian, has been doing standup for more than 30 years, most recently with Augie T. He joins Ogata with Dynamite and Mane for A Comedy Story, which also tours to Maui this Friday.
