Everywhere Man
Concerts & Clubs / “I’ve traveled all over the world,” singer-songwriter David Choi says nonchalantly. “Hawaii is still at the top of the list.” He should know. He’s performed across the U.S., and in Singapore, Korea, Malaysia and Australia, and has been to the Islands for both business and pleasure–all thanks to YouTube. Hawaii inspired his song “Thinking About You”–a sweet ode featuring his slight rasp and an ‘ukulele–so much so that Choi is flying here to film the song’s video (directed by local filmmaker Mikey Inouye), and perform it and others at Fresh Café. “Everything’s gonna be local,” Choi says of his choice in a production crew. “It makes the video special.”
Choi’s meet-and-greet is at 2 p.m. at THEFACESHOP in Ward Warehouse–concert ticketholders have VIP access–and he’ll take the mic at Fresh Café’s Loft in Space that night. “[I’ll play] mostly originals, maybe one cover at most,” he says.
Choi’s Internet success led him to work with other YouTubers, such as Boyce Avenue, Kina Grannis and Wong Fu Productions. Does everyone on the Internet know each other?? Choi explains, laughing, “We all meet each other through . . . YouTube events. We just end up knowing everybody. [It’s] an awesome community.”
