Taking Direction
Learning / American director Ramin Bahrani is one of independent cinema’s most exciting voices–one worth listening to.
The auteur behind Man Push Cart, Chop Shop, Goodbye Solo and upcoming At Any Price starring Dennis Quaid and Zac Efron, Bahrani will lead Narrative Filmmaking with Ramin Bahrani, engaging attendees in a hands-on workshop over the course of a weekend.
Far from the Michael Bay School of In-Your-Face Directing, the observant Bahrani tells quieter narratives–the human spirit is his most interesting special effect.
“Reality provides a context for nearly anything to be possible,” he said in an interview with the Pacific New Media college at the University of Hawaii. “I want the audience to feel connected to the characters and the world as if it were their own lives, rather than a fantasy they know does not exist.”
Alongside focusing on how to clearly articulate critical moments through performance, shot progression and more, he’ll also elaborate on his own creative process. Sure, it’s way pricier than a general movie ticket, but how often to you get a lesson from a master included in your stub?
