Drink For Loungevity
Concerts & Clubs / Back when Downbeat Diner & Lounge opened in 2011, it quickly established itself as the best spot in Chinatown for a cheap bite and beer. Only thing, they didn’t have the lounge part (yet). Still, vegans flocked. Owners Serena Hashimoto and Josh86 are finally able to celebrate the grand opening of Downbeat Lounge, with live music from Sweet Corn & Peanut and Animal Mother.
Since Josh86 also runs the Chinatown Music Studios in the Blaisdell Hotel downtown, it’s an understatement to say he takes acoustics seriously. The walls of the lounge and those surrounding the stage are insulated, and the wall opposing the bar is stepped for better acoustics.
But, even if the sound is as close to perfect as Josh86 can get, don’t expect live music every night. “When I go to a bar, sometimes I just want to play pool, listen to the house music and talk to my friends,” Hashimoto says. “Although I don’t know where a pool table can fit, I’m going to make it happen,” she said, laughing. “Basically, I just want a bar that I would like to go to.”
Is she nervous about taking on such an expansion? “There’s a Pippi Longstocking saying that I swear by: ‘I’ve never tried it before, so I’m sure I can do.’ . . . I just want a bar that’s going to be awesome and rad.”
