Won’t you be my neighbor?
As a mental health professional and homeless service provider working in the downtown/Chinatown area, I support the proposed River Street Residences project. The River Street project is a permanent housing plan that would provide security in addition to much-needed public restrooms. It is a “Housing First” model, repeatedly proven throughout our country to significantly reduce homelessness and crime in neighborhoods where it has been implemented.
There are all types of rationales used to disguise fear-based discrimination. It is inhumane to turn our backs on (or “send away”) neighbors who need our support. Chinatown would not “lose its character” if this project becomes realized. Rather, it would add to the character of a truly compassionate community that cares and provides for its own. The character of Chinatown would not be diminished, but enhanced. Where is the aloha?
