Bachi business
I am writing in response to Ryan Senaga’s “Haunted Honolulu” (10/28) alternative ghost-crawl suggestions. Most of us growing up here in the islands have heard about these spooky kine locations since kid time, however one in particular is not somewhere the general public should be checking out in the late hours of the night. The Diamond Head Memorial Park is a cemetery and should be treated with the utmost respect. Park hours are from 6am–6pm daily (depending on the season).
Ryan Senaga’s article fails to mention two very important pieces of information:
1. The general public cannot drive into DHMP after park hours due to the fact that the entrance is closed to vehicles.
2. The statue the article instructs you to flash your headlights at is that of the Virgin Mary (if you’re local then you understand what I mean when I say bachi).
Just because a handful of ghost tours here in Hawaii choose to cash in on this type of behavior doesn’t make it OK. A quick call to the Diamond Head Memorial Park is enough to understand the safety concerns of running around in a cemetery late at night. If you should get hurt nobody is around to help you, you can call for help but people just might mistaken you for obake and run the other way!
