By George!
In a letter [“Shark bait,” 10/21] to Honolulu Weekly, George Downing wrote, “…acquired and learned knowledge produces the conclusion that the environment must not be disturbed so that our keiki will enjoy the same ocean we do.”
We know that if one surfer is attracted to a wave, others will follow, and expansion means more surfers moving closer to areas used by spear fishermen, swimmers, snorkelers and other ocean users.
Furthermore, groups of surfers will lose their fear of others in the water. It is critical to see the big picture: more surfers means more blood will be spilled from collisions and other mishaps. It is not a matter of if it will happen, it is a matter of when.
More lives are lost and injuries sustained from surfboards than from sharks! If you are afraid of sharks, stay out of the water!
