By the numbers
I found Mr. Johnson’s letter “Correctional Matters” (Letters, 10/21) very interesting. The figures I cited in my piece questioning the closing of Kulani Prison (Letters, 10/7) came directly from Kulani and were based on 210 inmates, as my letter clearly stated. The figures for the Federal Detention Center came from the Ways and Means Committee and those figures are from the department as well.
Playing with the numbers doesn’t hide the fact that a facility that is vital to Hawaii’s correctional system is closing, despite the department’s testimony asserting the need for minimum-security prison beds.
