Corrections corrections
I am a Hawaii inmate at the Red Rock Correctional center in Eloy, Ariz. I am responding to a letter “What the Hilo?” [Letters, 10/7] written by Kat Brady. I have been in the system for more than 20 years. The Department of Public Safety claims on closing down Kulani Correctional Facility in Hilo is nothing more than a bunch of excuses. If the State of Hawaii is serious about saving money, it should cut back on guards’ overtime fraud that is costing Hawaii taxpayers millions of dollars every year, and comply with the laws and inmates’ rights so there will be no more lawsuits against the Department of Public Safety, which are also costing taxpayers money.
DOPS officials are overpaid for doing less or nothing for Hawaii inmates and the system. Everything they get their hands on they mess up (the prison system, youth correctional center, the Hawaii state hospital, etc.). They’ve just been around too long with the same old ideas, they’re afraid to make improvements within the system, and make corrections-corrections.
