A disingenuous governor
I was so sure of [Neil] Abercombie as candidate for governor [that] I waved signs for him, spent time at his headquarters calling voters, [helped] his “get out the youth vote” team and I spent weekends canvassing for him. What have I gotten in return except for more pay cuts, increased health care premiums, a forced contract and a governor that cares not for current laws (650-foot-tall Kakaako building, public funds for private pre-school, a non-negotiated teacher contract)? Just like the previous administration, Abercombie and the [Department of Education] negotiate through the media in attempt to get the public against teachers. The DOE and admin put out the cost of the teachers unions contract portraying the restoration of our 5-percent pay cut as additional funds going to teachers as if this is a raise. My first year as a public school teacher I had an 11.3-percent pay cut, then 7 percent and the last two years 5 percent. This does not seem like “A New Day In Hawaii,” Governor. You cannot put education first if you put teachers last!
