Smokin’ Waimanalo
A new country cafe has opened just in time for summer beachgoers. Punahou alumns, David Campbell and Patrick Shea are partners in Sweet Home Waimanalo, a new venture launched with help from Steve Brown of Downtown fame. Although Campbell’s background is in brewing (he’s Sam Choy’s brewmaster), he has expanded his repertoire to include the smoking of meats and fish. The simple menu (plate lunches, wraps, sandwiches and fresh fruit smoothies) features local ingredients , many from Waimanalo farms. Next door to Patrick Ching’s store, the cafe offers outdoor seating. The partners hope to create more green awareness in their beachside community by providing space for The Green House to offer classes, and of course, by serving good, locally sourced food.
Sweet Home Waimanalo, 41-1025 Kalanianaole Hwy, 10:30am–7:30pm daily, 259-5737
Cheezy
Through the month of May, Auntie Pasto’s is hosting a CheeseFest. Look for homemade mozzarella and special dishes that celebrate cheese. Expect treats like homemade ricotta dumplings, three-cheese risotto, whole wheat pasta with mizithra. Call 523-8855 for details.
Going, going, gone
A number of hotels on the Kona coast have laid off their chefs and/or closed their restaurants due to visitor declines. Casualties include Piet Wigmans at the Hapuna Prince, Edwin Goto at the Mauna Lani.
