Holoholo
Waianae Farmers’ Market reopened last weekend at the Waianae Comprehensive Health Center. Saturdays, 8:30am–12pm.
Haleiwa market is attracting a good crowd on the North Shore on Sundays 9am–1pm. Check ‘em both out next time you do your country holoholo.
Chinatown Crawl
Chinatown markets are bursting with fresh island greens and fruits—a sure sign that spring has finally arrived on Oahu. The season’s first mangoes, both Hayden and Pirie, are available in various stages of ripeness. Soursop, good for sorbet, smoothies and juice, are back, along with chocolate sapote, longan, eggfruit and star apples.
Fish are becoming more plentiful as well, including ‘oio ($2.99/lb.), ulua and uhu (both at $5.99/lb.).
Unusual find—live Alaska King Crab in the Maunakea Marketplace. Pricey at $19.99/lb. and more than a handful to get into a very large pot of boiling water, but we suspect that the taste is far superior to the typical salty, frozen product.
