‘Aina Hoola oa Mailikuahi: The Conference to Grow a Food Sovereignty Movement
E ola ka ‘aina, e ola ke kanaka, e ola ke kaiaulu–May the land have life, may man have life, may the community have life.
In the past few years, conferences focusing on community food security and sustainability have been conducted throughout the Hawaiian Islands. This year, the first such event on Oahu will be held in Kahana valley June 12–13. On June 12, participants will have the chance to visit and work in some of Oahu’s farms, fishponds and learning gardens, which work to build our island’s food self-sufficiency. On Saturday, attendees will hear from the people foundational to the Hawaii food movement as well as from emerging youth leaders from 11 high schools and organizations. Workshops will include Climate Change and Food Security, Public Advocacy 101, Building Your Organic Garden, Farm to Cafeteria, Canning and Pickling, Limu Identification and Fish Preparation. –Laurie V.
