Down on the bayou
Charming Mr. Two Boots, Kevin Tate, will be teaching Cajun style to a few fortunate students. This Louisiana chef will be sharing his knowledge of all manner of gumbo and roux and jambalaya. Since his Kailua restaurant closed, this may be the best way to secure access to the fragrant and spicy food of the bayou, sadly missing from our island restaurant scene.
Sat 9/12, 10am–1pm, $60, register at [outreach.hawaii.edu]/.
Slow down
September is Slow Food USA’s big push to increase SF membership across the country. It will be offering memberships to any new member who wishes to make a donation (of any amount) to SFUSA. This is a great opportunity for those of you who are Friends of SF but not yet members, or for you to urge your SFoodish friends into joining at last. On Oahu, one can join either KCC Slow Food (for KCC culinary students) or Slow Food Oahu, the other local chapter. There are also active chapters on Kauai and the Big Island. Local Slow Food chapters sponsor tasty events, educational efforts and political actions to change our island food system. To see what is happening locally, try looking at [slowfoodoahu.org] or [slowfoodkcc.blogspot.com].
Editor’s note: Publisher Laurie V. Carlson is president of Slow Food Oahu.
