Kokua Market / Moiliili’s Kokua Market, one of the pioneers of natural foods in Hawaii, will celebrate its cooperative roots this month. In nineteenth-century England, cooperative stores helped empower factory workers in a time when they had few rights (they also couldn’t vote because they owned no land) and little control over access to basic needs like food.
Kokua continues this tradition as the only natural foods cooperative in Hawaii. Membership is based on a share purchase of $150 that is used for store operations. Departing members get a full refund. Those who wish to volunteer three hours a week working at the store get a special discount of 15 percent off shelf prices.
On Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, the co-op will offer all current members a 15 percent discount on purchases. On the 31st from 10am to 4pm, there will be food samples, music and bucket garden demonstrations.
Kapiolani Community College’s Culinary Institute of the Pacific has stopped operating its student-run restaurant, Ka ‘Ikena, for a few weeks. Spectacular ocean views, Pacific-focused food, vegetarian options and reasonable prices lead many an akamai diner to these tables. The restaurant will once again serve lunch 11/3–12/4, Tuesday through Fridays. Seatings are at 11am, 11:30am and 12pm. 734-9499 for reservations.
