Mercado de la Raza has homemade tamales available on most Saturday mornings through the end of 2009. Marta, the owner and cook, offers up green chile and cheese, beef, chicken, pork, corn stuffed and occasionally chicken mole. This small store has fresh salsas and guacamole, a fine selection of chili peppers and other enticing ingredients for New World cooking.

Hokulani Bakery has opened at Pioneer Plaza, street level, just in time for the holidays. This is the second location for Hokulani, home of virtuoso cupcake and cookie bakers. Initially, hours will be 9am–2pm; the store plans to move to a 5pm closing time.

The annual Cinema Italiano Film Festival will screen films from Bologna’s Slow Food Film Festival. The line-up includes a handful of documentaries and a number of short films, all food-focused. The screenings will be held at Kahala’s Consolidated Theatres on Thu 11/5 at 11:30am and on Sun 11/8 at 11:30am and 2:15pm.

The island pork gambit is back. Last year several animal protection groups orchestrated a consumer boycott of “island pork.” A feature of Hawaii’s food scene for many years, pigs raised on the mainland, shipped to Honolulu, then slaughtered here are sold as “island pork.” The CEO of Hawaii Food Products promised to stop importing these animals, but as soon as the spotlight was off, it was deception as usual according to The World Society for the Protection of Animals.
