Persimmons are starting to pop up in Chinatown and at farmers’ markets. These golden harbingers of fall are best eaten in persimmon pudding. Or if your fruits are very ripe, eat them with brandy and ice cream. Consider putting together a batch for the holidays as an alternative to the standard canned or store-bought pumpkin pie. Or use them as holiday decor until you start nibbling on them.
A new jook and noodle spot opened at 1152 Maunakea Street in Sweet Basil’s old home. Lam’s Kitchen specialties are congee, noodle soups and look fun at reasonable prices–$2.50 to $5 per menu item. Daily 7am–3pm, 536-6222
Panya is replacing Satura Cakes in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. This is the fourth location and should open its doors by the end of November.
Crepe Café, once a mere cart in Waikiki, has reopened in Manoa as a full-fledged restaurant. 2740 E. Manoa Road, open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Chef Sean Priester resigned from his position as Executive Chef at Top of Waikiki, but continues to expand his local sphere of influence with the startup of a lunch wagon on Maunakea Street (on the Diamond Head side close to Happy Day). He will be serving healthy southern cuisine Mon–Fri 10:30am–2:30pm. Specialties include organic vegetarian collard greens, black-eyed pea chili and tilapia. Meanwhile, John Neff has been hired as Priester’s replacement at Top.
