Lots of people actually live in Waikiki, and the condo hive now has its own farmers’ market–in King’s Village (when did it stop being an Alley?). A modest selection of produce vendors sets up on Fridays 4–9pm
Is our economy recovering? Must be–the Royal Hawaiian’s Azure restaurant (923-7311) introduces The Royal Papaina, a special eight-course wine-and-food pairing dinner held in a private beachfront cabana (actually more of a tent) for up to four people. Double date! Cost: $150 per person, which is actually a pretty good deal–it includes the wine.
Or maybe the recession is deepening–Shore Bird in the Outrigger Reef on the Beach (922-2887), where bargain-hunting diners have been grilling their own steaks for three decades, has launched an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet for the shockingly low price of $9.95. You can graze every day noon–3pm. In the lineup–fresh fruit, salads, pasta, kalua pig sandwich and mahi tacos.
Chef Mavro’s winter menu started Jan. 6. You can get an affordable sample of it with the $69 three-course globetrotting menu: Maitake mushrooms with a Southeast Asian accent of sautéed green papaya, galangal and kaffir lime; Euro flavors of roasted lamb loin with a vadouvan of lentils with lamb bacon (!) and lamb jus (baaaa); and Middle Eastern overtones in a marinated date tart with orange blossom marscapone mousse with cardomum syrup. For wine pairings, add another $48.
