Honolulu’s restaurant businesses are one of the city’s most generous communities. So many of them are constantly donating time and resources to good causes, even in this tough economic climate. On March 1, 12th Avenue Grill (1145C 12th Ave., 732-9469). holds its Community Plate Night–eat at the restaurant and 15 percent of the cost of your meal goes to the American Red Cross International Response Fund efforts in Haiti. Knowing where your money is going will make that Kulana Yankee pot roast taste that much better.
Town’s Wednesday Wine Down is one of the most affordable, tasty–and educational–ways to wind down after work. Just $25 gets you a taste of four wines and a tasting plate to go with each selection. This is stuff that is not on the menu. So worth it. Today’s focus: Eastern European wines (think Austria and Bulgaria), with American Wines & Spirits Elton Nichols doing the pours and schooling. d.k. Steak House (Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort, 2522 Kalakaua Ave., 931-6280) holds an Edmeades Winemaker Dinner March 25. Chef Jason Miyasaki has devised a four-course menu to go with the California vineyard’s famous zinfandels. The company’s famed winemaker Van Williamson will be at the dinner, moving from table to table, and you can ask him as many questions as you want (he’s super nice). On the menu: red wine–braised oxtail tortellini, red veal sausage and salad, Maui Cattle Co. grass-fed ribeye, warm chocolate bomb. Price: $75, includes wine.
Lanikai Juice, home of delicious smoothies and purveyor to the stars, is celebrating its new Waialae Ave. location–don’t look in Kaimuki, as this one is at the far Koko Head end in Kahala–by offering 20 percent off its prices between 7 and 9am. 4346 Waialae Ave., 732-7200
