HI represent: Hawaii chefs have a solid presence among semi-finalists for this year’s James Beard Awards, the Oscars of the food world. In the running: Alan Wong’s Restaurant for Outstanding Restaurant (competition includes Mario Batali’s Babbo and Thomas Keller’s Bouchon); Kauai Grill chef de cuisine Colin Hazama for Rising Star Chef of the Year; Hiroshi Eurasion Tapas’ Cherie Pascua for Outstanding Pastry Chef; Halekulani’s La Mer for Outstanding Service; Chef Mavro’s Kevin Chong for Best Chef: Pacific. Winners will be announced May 3 in a gala ceremony at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall in New York City, home of the James Beard House. [www.jamesbeard.org]
Cool off: If you’re tired of waiting in line at Waiola Shave Ice, there’s a new ice shaver in town–Ailana Shave Ice, at 1430 Kona St., between Keeaumoku and Piikoi, next to Royal Hawaiian jewelry (955-8881). They say their “homemade syrups are very healthy and tasty” and come in flavors such as rasp-cranberry, Calpico and peanut butter caramel–along with old favorites like shtrahberry and lilikoi. Open 10am-6pm Monday-Saturday. Bonus: Parking.
Bunny brunch: Buffet-style Kai Market (Sheraton Waikiki, 921-4600), which bills itself as a farm-to-table eatery, offers an Easter Sunday brunch and dinner on April 4. Brunch features dishes such as pan-fried sea bass with Thai lobster curry sauce and a carving station with ‘alaea salt-crusted prime rib and lehua-honey rubbed ham. At dinner you can get Singapore-style Manila clams with lup cheong and soy-sake braised beef short ribs. Brunch: 10:30am–3pm, adults $55, children 6–12 $15. Dinner: 5–9:30pm, adults $59, children 6-12 $15. Children 5 years and under eat for free.
