Food & Drink / Pete Licata of Honolulu Coffee Co. recently won the title 2011 United States Barista Champion in a competition that recognizes the art and skill of espresso drink preparation and service. Licata won with coffee beans he personally harvested, processed and roasted from Rusty’s Hawaiian in Ka’u and Wai’ono Meadows in North Kona on the Big Island.
Opened: Gypsy Grill, a Brazilian food truck on the corner of Ward and Kapiolani, across from the Blaisdell. Open from 10am to 2pm.
Happy birthday to Pacific Soul, which turns one on May 16, and to Peace Cafe, Honolulu’s first vegan cafe, also celebrating its first birthday throughout the month of May.
Opened: Heeia Pier General Store and Deli, by Mark Noguchi, former line cook at Town and Chef Mavro, and Russ Inouye, of the Vertical Junkies. The menu is still being developed, but recent items included a Kuahiwi hamburger steak and ‘oio loco moco. The view from the kitchen may be the best kitchen view ever.
