Opened: Kakaako Makai Community Cultural Marketplace, a market to focus on local, non-GMO produce and proteins (i.e. fresh fish), as well as local food artisans like Leialoha’s Coconut Creamery, with coconut cream-based sorbet, and Madre Chocolate. Grand opening celebration July 30, 9am-2pm, $25. Regular market hours Fridays 4:30pm to 8pm, Saturdays 9am to 2pm.
Opened: a downtown branch of Aloha Salads, featuring fresh, made to order salads
Closed: Orine Sarang Chae on Keeaumoku.
Closed: Pablo’s Cantina in Ward Center.
Governor Abercrombie restores agricultural inspector positions, approving the re-hiring of 10 agricultural inspectors, positions that were cut in 2009. This will increase the level of inspections of produce and agricultural material and decrease inspection delays at Honolulu International Airport.
