Counting the days.
The Whole Ox Deli Restaurant/Cafe, chef Robert McGee’s much buzzed-about butcher chop, salumeria and café, opens March 28 after months of demo and renovation at 327 Auahi St. (but enter off Keawe Street). McGee and partners made a flying research trip to San Francisco and raised funds for an $11,000 smoker and a rotisserie the size of walk-in fridge. See daily reports on their Facebook page. The Tongue on Maui?
Hypester Gene Simmons, he of the weird jet-black hair, (Music: KISS bassist; TV: “Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels”; biographer, “SEX MONEY KISS”) opens Rock & Brews in El Segundo, Calif., Calif. April 1; other outlets of the burger bar/house of tortured guitar worship will follow, including one on Maui. Sorry, Gene, Sammy Hagar (Van Halen, Chickenfoot) beat you to it with his Tex-Mex Sammy’s Beach Bar and Grill at the Kahului Airport.
To market.
Mahiku Farmers Market, which hosts markets in ‘Ewa Beach, Kane’ohe and Waikiki, has added Kailua to the mix with a market 4-8pm Saturdays at Kailua Elementary School, 315 Ku’ulei Rd. Farmer Sonny Duong says they average 40-50 vendors, mostly fruits and vegetables and prepared food, but also plants, flowers, crafts. [mahikufarmersmarket.com]
