In a lawsuit brought by the National Resources Defense Council, a judge in the US District Court of Southern New York ordered the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to follow through on a stand it took in 1977 banning “preventative” use of penicillin and tetracycline in healthy farm animals. The agency order, never enforced due to industry opposition, was designed to lessen the prevalence of antibiotic resistance in humans; resistance deprives doctors of two their most powerful anti-infection tools. The FDA has until June 22 to appeal.
