Bistro to bow. Terry Kakazu of HASR Wine in Chinatown has partnered with chef Rodney Uyehara, formerly of the Moana-Surfrider Beachhouse, to open HASR Bistro in the recently vacated Grand Café and Bakery, HASR Wine’s neighbor on North Puahi Street. They plan a fluid all-day menu: breakfast to lunch, tea to tapas, dinner to late-night noshing in French country bistro style with a fine dining feel at affordable prices, Kakazu said. There’ll be a bar or buy a bottle of wine at HASR and corkage will be waived.
Big News for Big Island. O’ahu-born Peter Pahk is the new executive chef at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, returning to the Islands after an absence of 30 years. Pahk, who will supervise three restaurants at the resort plus themed events such as the weekly luau has worked around the country in Ritz Carlton resorts, at the world-renowned Silverado Resort. And not too far away on the Kohala Coast, the former Hualalai Grille by Alan Wong has become Hualalai Grille–An American Steakhouse with executive chef James Ebreo staying on.

Beef and brew. Maui Cattle Co. and Maui Brewing Co. will be featured in a Summer Maui Beer Dinner Aug. 5 at 12th Ave. Grill. It’s a special Sunday opening with limited seating for a five-course, beer-matched meal.
