Honolulu Weekly Green Market

On Earth Day, April 22nd, 2009, Honolulu Weekly sponsored our first ever Green Market downtown on Fort Street. Over 50 green vendors participated— many environmental groups and a variety of green businesses, from agricultural endeavors to transportation alternatives.

The Weekly’s Green Market is important because of its broad reach and because of its focus. Its location on Fort St. makes the event accessible to a large and varied downtown population. For Hawaii to make the necessary changes in thinking about the environment, we must reach all sorts of people, not just greenies.

The selection of vendors was key to the success of The Green Market. We invited participation from only those who contribute in a major way to island sustainability, focusing on energy, transportation, gardening, food, and products made or recycled in Hawaii.

Because of the success of our 4 Green Markets in 2009, we have decided to hold 4 more in 2010. Our next Green Market on Fort Street Mall will be on Earth Day, April 22nd from 9:30am to 3pm.

This is a wonderful opportunity to show your organization’s support for environmental awareness and change in Hawaii nei.

A loyal audience of upscale readers

Readers of alternative newsweeklies are a savvy marketer’s dream come true. They’re opinion leaders, professionals and business managers, artists and students — a passionate, active consumer group with ample, disposable income. They outpace the average consumer in purchases of big-ticket items, including jewelry, clothing, sporting goods, vehicles, computers and software.

According to SMS Research’s statewide reader survey, Honolulu Weekly readers are more likely than the readers of any other newspaper to visit shopping centers — including Ala Moana, Manoa Marketplace, Kailua, Aloha Tower, Ward, Kaimuki, Kahala, Restaurant Row and Pearl Highlands. Our readers are active imbibers of arts, culture and entertainment. They take in movies, live theater, music and go to night clubs like no other audience on the island of O‘ahu. Weekly readers are big on sports, fitness and health. In fact, according to SMS they have higher indexes for swimming, jogging, weight training, bicycling, hiking, camping and skin diving/snorkeling than the readers of dailies, Honolulu Magazine or Pacific Business News.

The reason? Honolulu Weekly readers are younger, better educated and more active—both socially and physically. We are more efficient at reaching young professionals and people under the age of 35 than any other print media in the state of Hawai‘i.
